Lake-Smart Safety Tips

Alberta’s lakes come alive in the summer. There’s nothing better than a day on the water with friends and family, whether you’re boating, paddling, swimming, or just enjoying the view. But as first responders, we also know how quickly a fun day at the lake can turn into an emergency.

With several of our stations located near popular lakes and recreation spots, our teams are uniquely positioned to see both the joy and the risks that come with Alberta’s lake life. That’s why we’re sharing a few lake-smart safety tips to help keep your summer safe and enjoyable.

1. Life Jackets Save Lives

Even if you’re a strong swimmer, a life jacket is essential when you’re on the water. Conditions can change fast, and a fall into the lake can lead to cold shock, disorientation, or injury. Don’t take the chance. Wear a properly fitted, approved life jacket every time you’re boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

2. Stay Off Your Phone and Stay Aware

Distractions near water can be dangerous. Whether you’re supervising kids or just enjoying the shoreline, keep your eyes on the water. A quick glance at your phone can mean missing the few critical seconds when someone needs help.

3. Keep Kids Within Arm’s Reach

When children are in or near the water, active supervision is key. That means staying close and being ready to act immediately if needed. Flotation devices are helpful but not a substitute for adult supervision.

4. Watch the Weather

Alberta weather can turn on a dime, especially around lakes. Strong winds, storms, and sudden drops in temperature can create dangerous water conditions in minutes. Check the forecast before heading out and keep an eye on the sky while you’re on the water.

5. Don’t Underestimate Cold Water

Even on a hot day, Alberta lakes can be surprisingly cold. A sudden plunge can cause cold water shock, a physical reaction that can lead to gasping, hyperventilation, and even cardiac arrest. Wearing a life jacket and easing into the water slowly can help reduce the risk.

Enjoy the Lake, But Make Safety a Priority

We love seeing our communities make the most of Alberta’s incredible lakes, and we want you to do it safely. Whether you’re heading out to fish, float, or swim, take the time to prepare, stay alert, and look out for each other.
